Regional Training Programme on New & Emerging Challenges in Rural
Development for Poverty Alleviation |

| The
above training programme was organized by HARTI in collaboration with
the Commonwealth Secretariat from 18th to 23rd May in Polonnaruwa,
Sri Lanka. |

| The
main objective of the programme was to identify new and emerging
challenges to implement poverty alleviation programmes and to share
the experiences of various government and non-government rural development
programmes in the region. |

The
course provided the participants with useful insights into:
- Conceptualizing policies, strategies
and programmes related to poverty focused rural development.
- Sharing
information, best practices and lessons learned from policies;
- Lessons
from successful experiences on poverty reduction through rural
development;
- Engaging
and promoting collaboration and networking among the key players
in poverty alleviation programmes of
various agencies.
Twenty two (22) participants from government departments, authorities,
provincial councils and also several leading NGOs participated in
this programme.
Each
participant presented a paper on rural development programmes implemented
by his/her relevant agency at the seminar. Field study was organized
to visit the poverty focused rural development project at Wiharagama,
in Polonnaruwa implemented by Ministry of Nation Building and Infrastructure
Development. |

Training Programme on “Marketing Extension” |
The
above programme was held from 20th to 22nd at Balangoda for the
officers of the Agriculture Department of the Sabaragamuwa Province.
The
main objectives of the programme are:
- To
enhance participants knowledge about the concepts on marketing
extension;
- To
understand ways and means of delivering marketing intelligence
among farmers;
- To
develop forward and backward linkages among market participants,
thereby improving supply chain management.
38
officers participated in this programme. At the end of programme
impact of the training programme on improvement of knowledge,
skill and attitude of the participants were evaluated and tested
statistically. Results show that training has an impact.
